Leper Hospital

The history of medicine has been shaped by infections, diseases and outbreaks. During the 2020 Covid-19 we took time to look back at how these were controlled and treated with Public Health measures, vaccines and medicine in our local area. Long before our hospital records began the church, in the Middle Ages, took on care of those outcast because of leprosy. Before greater understanding of diseases and medical knowledge separation of the sick was common practice because of fear of infection. There was a leper hospital sited near Old Sarum from 1195 and one of the earliest formal institutions for the care of the sick.
